Abstract

The ability of both rats and pigeons to solve discriminations will be investigated using experiments in which reward, and nonreward, are signalled by the manner in which a pattern of stimulation is structured. Thus a black square to the left of a white square might signal food and the reflection of this pattern will signal no food. There are four objectives to the proposal. First, to provide a convincing demonstration of a structural discrimination. Second, to determine the sort of information that can be used to solve a structural discrimination. Third, to evaluate theoretical explanations for the manner in which structural discriminations are solved. Fourth, to investigate the neural basis of structural discriminations.
