Abstract
We recently discovered a striking divergence in expression patterns of inhibin-A (inhA) and inhibin-B (inhB) during follicle development in the hen; inhA peaks in the largest preovulatory follicle (F1) while inhB peaks in much smaller (7-9mm) follicles that are about to enter preovulatory hierarchy. Given the recent identification of 2 candidate inhibin co- receptors in mammals (inhBP and beta-glycan) that may be selective for inhB and inhA respectively, we propose to (i) identify and clone the chicken homologues of these 2 receptors (ii) compare the temporal and spatial expression patterns of inhBP, beta-glycan, inhB and inhA during follicle development in vivo, during the ovulatory cycle in vivo and in isolated theca and granulosa cells in vitro. These studies will yield novel data and help elucidate the roles of different inhibin isoforms in avian folliculogenesis.
