Abstract

For decades oestrogen was thought of only as a sex hormone. However, in recent years oestrogen has been shown to exert effects on areas of the brain that are not primarily involved in reproduction, such as the basal forebrain, hippocampus and cortex. The primary aims of this project are (i) to provide a more detailed profile of the nature of cognitive deficits following oestrogen depletion and (ii) to investigate the extent to which oestrogen effects (depletion and replacement) are due to modulation of cholinergic neurons and/or growth factors. The knowledge gained will increase our basic understanding of the functional consequences of changes in oestrogen levels observed during normal ageing, in particular the menopause.
