Abstract

Metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors can act as novel associativity sensors through the generation of supralinear Ca2+ signals. The current proposal will use advanced confocal imaging techniques and electrophysiology to characterise further mGlu receptor-mediated supralinear Ca2+ signalling in the hippocampus, from the level of Ca2+ rises expressed within dendritic spines to global Ca2+ signals observed throughout the entire neuron. We will focus on the role of Ca2+ stores and Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release during coincident activation of mGlu receptors and activity-dependent Ca2+ influx pathways. Functional studies will relate these processes to associative synaptic plasticity and recency detection.
