Abstract

Genetic selection for increased growth rates and muscle mass in meat type chickens is associated with an increased incidence of spontaneously occurring skeletal muscle damage (idiopathic myopathy) at slaughter age. The aim of this project is to establish if this pathological condition is associated with muscle pain or discomfort, which would constitute a major welfare issue from hatch. This proposal employs biochemical and histological techniques to characterise temporal changes in muscle status and the development of pathology, and electrophysiological procedures to examine the properties and responses of muscle nociceptors to such changes.
