Abstract
We will investigate the role of short-term memory in the long-term learning of phonological sequences. Central to this investigation will be experimental exploration and computational modelling of the processes underlying the acquisition of phonological word-forms, specifying in particular how these processes draw on the short-term memory system responsible for the immediate serial recall of verbal material. We will develop laboratory analogues of vocabulary acquisition with initial emphasis placed on the so-called Hebb effect (Hebb, 1961). As well as helping us understand the memory processes underlying vocabulary acquisition, the data acquired will help us to address contentious issues regarding the representation of serial order in memory.
