Abstract

This project will study the genetic basis of growth in mice, focusing on a quantitative trait locus (QTL) identified in previous work. We propose to refine the position of this QTL and to examine candidate genes in the region. Genotyping of existing samples at additional markers, followed by progeny testing of congenic lines that differ for a segment of chromosome 1 containing the QTL, will refine its position of approximately 0.25cM. Such resolution will facilitate the identification of a small number of candidate genes using data from the mouse and human genome sequences. Analysis of expression and sequence variation in these genes will further refine the list of candidates, paving the way for the underlying gene(s) to be cloned.
