Abstract

Mammalian toll-like receptors (TLRs) are known to play an important role in the induction of the innate and adaptive immune responses and are associated with susceptibility to infectious disease. We aim to isolate chicken TLRs and to determine whether they are associated with genetic resistance to common poultry diseases using the IAH panel of inbred chicken lines which are known to differ in their resistance/susceptibility to a wide range of pathogens. Further, we will examine the role of TLRs in the chicken immune response by characterising the expression patterns of relevant tissues and cells before and after infectious challenge and by developing models to examine the specificity and function of individual TLR family members.
