Abstract

Many mammals move along scent marked trails but there has been little characterisation of mammalian scents used in navigation or site/resource recognition. This programme will provide a detailed behavioural and biochemical characterisation of navigation scents used by wild house mice and their deposition in the environment. Active components of navigation scents will be identified using behavioural bioassays linked directly to gas chromatographic separation of volatiles. We will explore the role of major urinary proteins (MUPs) in extending the longevity of volatile navigation cues in the environment and the interaction between scent signals of territory ownership and navigation cues.
