Abstract

Complex bird song repertoires are some of the most studied and yet least understood of sexually selected male traits. The proposed research forms the first experimental test of whether physiological stress controls the development of adult song repertoire size through either; 1) nutrient restriction; 2) parasitic infection; or 3) stress hormones. This work will also test, for the first time, whether physiological stress controls the development of the underlying song control pathway in the brain. In addition, it will also test whether physiological stress affects female choice for song complexity. This project will therefore address developmental, functional and mechanistic explanations for the evolution of complex acoustic signals. (Joint with grant 7/S14062.)
