Abstract

Desert locusts exist in a range of forms between two morphologically and behaviourally distinct extremes, the solitarious and gregarious phases. For the first time we will combine expertise in locust phase transitions and neurobiology to analyse differences in neuronal function that underlie the marked differences in behaviour of these two forms. We will focus our analysis on short- and long-term neuronal changes by making intracellular recordings from identifiable neurones in the networks that control specific behaviours that differ between phases. We will characterise sensory pathways that contribute to the change in phase, and then analyse subsequent changes in the properties of specific neurones and well characterised networks that lead to the expression of different behaviours. This work will improve our understanding of how neuronal plasticity regulates expression of behaviour and could provide important leads for the control of this pest species.
