Abstract
Pheromonal learning in mice is mediated by long-lasting increases in feedback inhibition to mitral cell projection neurons in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). We aim to record the local field potential (LFP) in the AOB of freely moving female mice in response to male pheromones, and analyse the change in the frequency of LFP oscillation following pheromonal learning. This will be compared with the effects of pheromonal pre-exposure and of competing female pheromones. Simultaneous recordings from the AOB and the amygdala will test whether a change in the frequency of activity in the AOB disrupts communication between these simple cortical areas. Additionally, this technique will enable us to investigate the receptors and neural pathways involved in the response to the individual constituents of the complex pheromonal signal.
