Abstract

The genome of C. elegans will be completely sequenced by the end of 1998 and for the first time we will be able to predict the entire complement of ion channels that control excitable cells. To exploit this information, we propose to make whole cell patch clamp recordings from motoneurones and muscle in order to identify genes that are critical to determining the excitability of the somatic muscle cells. This will provide an important basis for the analysis of mutants and, by gene deletion and substitution, the conserved role of these channels in mammals.
