Abstract
A new experimental procedure allows me to study how birds perceive colour and form, in a task that resembles natural foraging. Domestic chicks are trained to small coloured paper packets which enclose a preferred food. Visual cues presented by the papers are learnt accurately and easily. The project will elucidate: (1) how each of the five cone photoreceptor types are used, (2) how cues might be used in nature. This complements my work on colour natural images, and will suggest how perception may constrain visual communication; for example in mate choice or warning coloration. Also, we can compare avian and primate form and colour vision.
