Abstract

The CD1 family is a unique third lineage of antigen presenting molecules. Members of the CD1 family have been shown to play a key role in presentation of non-protein antigens to subsets of T lymphocytes. The aims of this project involve the unambiguous characterisation of a novel CD1 gene which is likely to represent the ovine homologue of human CD1E. In parallel, full molecular characterisation of the ovine CD1 family together with investigation of the expression of both proteins and transcripts will be carried out in a range of tissues. In view of the likely role of CD1 in innate and mucosal immunity, detailed expression studies will be carried out in intestinal and pulmonary tissue.
