Abstract

The 24-month pilot fMRI study aims to initiate a series of cross-linguistic study using fMRI carried out jointly at the Oxford FMRIB centre and the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford in order to investigate brain activations in reading different written scripts. The primary goal is to compare regional brain activations associated with reading different scripts and identify areas associated specifically with alphabetic and non-alphabetic reading. The secondary goal is to test the universality of the current functional anatomy of reading, using Chinese characters.
