Abstract

We will study facilitation and inhibition in the triggering of simple visuo-motor reactions as a 'model system' for general principles of regulatory circuits underlying cognitive control. We will also study whether similar mechanisms are involved in the perception of biologically significant stimuli and in selecting one of two simultaneous objects for action. Behavioural measures will be combined with event-related brain potential (ERP) recordings to obtain a continuous index of the time course of facilitation and inhibition. The results will advance our understanding of basic mechanisms involved in the control of neural systems.
