Abstract
The project will investigate and attempt to dissociate the contributions of perirhinal and postrhinal cortex, and their sensory cortical afferents to rats' learning and memory. It also sets out to apply recent insights into the role of primate perirhinal cortex, to the analysis of rat perirhinal cortex. Behavioural experiments will be conducted to assess the cognitive impairments resulting from lesions of these structures, using an innovative environment for testing rats' visual and spatial memory that has been developed and validated by the applicants. The ultimate goal is to advance our understanding of human perception and memory, by studying the way in which rhinal and other temporal-lobe structures interact with the ventral and dorsal pathways for visual processing, and control basic memory functions, in both rodents and primates.
