Abstract
The parasite Cryptosporidium parvum causes in livestock and humans an enteric infection that responds poorly to available drugs. The identification of TRAP-C1 in C. parvum sporozoites has recently improved the perspective of developing immunological control measures. Antibodies against PbTRAP (the homologue of TRAP-C1 in Plasmodium berghei) block malaria sporozoite motility and drastically inhibit parasite invasion of host cells. These findings shed new light on the function of TRAP-C1 and provide the rationale for eliciting immunity against this molecule. The aim of this project is to assess the ability of TRAP-C1 antibodies (induced or passively transferred) to treat and/or prevent C. parvum infection in susceptible animals.
