Abstract

The project will focus on two principles that are believed to influence associative learning in animals. One generally accepted principle is that learning will take place whenever a surprising reinforcer is presented. Experiments will examine circumstances in which this principle is violated, in the hope of identifying more precisely the way in which surprise influences learning. The second principle is that the ease with which animals can discriminate between signals for the presence and absence of reward is governed by their similarity. This principle will be tested with a variety of discriminations and with independent tests to assess the similarity of the signals.
