Abstract

The promotion and prevention through social interaction of specified stereotypic and redirected behaviours (S&RB) will be investigated in an integrated programme of behavioural experiments involving hens, horses and a model species, voles. The programme will determine the influence of age and social status on social transmission of S&RB and the psychological mechanisms mediating such transmission. In addition, it will examine the interactions between stress, stereotypic behaviour and the social transmission of stereotypic behaviour and apply the knowledge obtained to model the spread of S&RB under specified conditions. The overall objective is to produce recommendations to reduce injury and improve welfare within current and evolving husbandry systems.
