Abstract

The mechanical properties and principal ultrastructural variables will be studied in parallel in a range of cuticular wing components, selected for their relevance to wing functioning in a range of insect species. The investigations will provide data for the numerical modelling and analysis of wing cuticles as fibrous composite materials. The chitin-free epicuticle will also be studied. The results will contribute significantly to flight biomechanics, to wing structural analysis and to biomaterials science. This study is a continuation of BBSRC grant S04978.
