Abstract

The most significant aim is to determine the resolution with which graded potentials are conveyed across synapses made by neurones that operate without trains of all-or-none impulses. The techniques will be to measure the linked neurones in the locust ocellar visual system. Mechanisms that limit synaptic resolution will be sought, including the quantal nature of transmitter release. Ultrastructural study will be undertaken to determine how vesicles are mobilised and recycled at the different discrete synapses that constitute a single functional synaptic connection.
