Abstract
Osteoporosis is a major welfare and economic problem of the poultry industry, but the mechanisms causing bone fragility are not understood. We have recently shown that the collagen matrix is modified post-translationally in osteoporosis, consistent with increased fragility of the bone. This finding demonstrates that osteoporosis is not a simple loss of bone. We intend to determine the relative importance of these modifications, that is, over-hydroxylation and changes in the cross-link profile, and relate them to the effect of dietary and genetic changes in the hens in terms of improved properties of the bone matrix.
