Abstract

Urinary proteins (MUPs) play an important role in the binding and release of volatile molecules known to modulate social interactions and individual reproduction in mice. We propose a programme of interdependent biochemical and behavioural studies that assess the nature of MUPs and ligands in wild mice, to explore the influences that environment plays upon the proteins and their cognate ligands, and to develop molecular probes to analyse the response to, and use of these molecules in semi- natural environments. This work, that benefits considerably from the collaboration between biochemists and behaviourists, offers considerable potential for the development of new methods of rodent control.
