Abstract

We have shown that adult female desert locusts can influence the phase of their developing offspring by adding a chemical agent to the foam surrounding their eggs. Using sensitive behavioural assays (based on multivariate statistical procedures) in conjunction with physiological and analytical biochemical techniques, we aim: 1) To establish the chemical identity of this agent; 2) To locate its site of production in the female; 3) To identify stimuli produced by other locusts in a crowd which lead to its production and release; and 4) To discover whether the same agent causes crowding-induced gregarisation of locusts after hatching.
