Abstract
The iap gene product of Cydia pomonella granulosis virus (CpGV) can block apoptosis in an insect cell system. We have found that IAP is similar to a Drosophila mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate oxidase (G3PO). The purpose of this grant is to investigate the mode of action of Cp-IAP. The role of Cp-IAP as an inhibitor of apoptosis will be explored by investigating whether it blocks apoptosis in CpGV-infected cells; by characterising cellular or viral proteins that interact with Cp-IAP; and by determining whether Cp-IAP can block apoptosis in Caenorhabditis elegans. Experiments will also be carried out to determine whether Cp-IAP effects cellular G3PO activity. Finally, the Drosophila IAP homologue will be cloned and characterised.
