Abstract

Simulation and mathematical modelling (both deterministic and stochastic) will be used to study aspects of foraging appropriate to ants and other social insects. In the experiments of Deneuborg, Pasteels et al, switching between resource patches was observed. That this might be a consequence of single interactions of the individuals was suggested by Deneuborg et al, and the model of Kirman supports this. We shall develop models which incorporate additional important aspects such as transient resources, resource depletion and renewal, spatial factors, more sophisticated communication rules, territorial geometry.
