Abstract
Previous experiments have implicated a restricted part of the chick forebrain, the intermediate and medial part of the hyperstriatum ventrale (IMHV), in the learning process of imprinting. We have previously shown that Fos-like immunoreactivity in neurones in the IMHV increases as a function of the amount chicks learn. The project will characterise the population of neurones engaged in imprinting and determine whether immediate early genes other than c-fos in IMHV cells, particularly NGFI-A, are also involved. In previous work we have implicated the protein kinase C substrate MARCKS in imprinting. We will enquire whether the subcellular distribution of MARCKS and the activity of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II, which may be functionally related to MARCKS, change with learning in the IMHV after imprinting.
