Abstract

The psychological mechanisms underlying imitation, and the potential role of imitation in cultural transmission, will be investigated using a bidirectional control procedure in behavioural studies of rats. Two hypotheses guide the research i) imitation differs from instrumental learning in involving complex, cross-model processes in the establishment of action representations, and ii) information acquired through imitation is retained with greater fidelity than information acquired through non-imitative social learning; it is more resistant to subsequent loss and modification by individual learning.
