Abstract
Recent evidence suggests that visual pattern recognition in birds differs from that in humans in fundamental respects. If true, this could have important implications for poultry welfare since the design of housing, recommendations for size of groups etc. depend critically on a correct interpretation of the birds' visual world. The purpose of this project would be to investigate the process of pattern recognition in hens with particular reference to their ability to discriminate and recognize other hens, using newly-developed video technology that has already proved extremely successful in the study of other areas of chicken behaviour.
