Abstract

This work will establish the epidemiology of Ileobacter intracellularis infection using- PCR and primer sets that have been developed. This information will provide a basis for the logical control of proliferative enteropathy, an assessment of the extent of clinical disease and methods for the identification of infected herds. Separate cell culture work will create and compare outer bacterial membranes from strains from a variety of sources and develop a cell culture assay for the activity of antimicrobials. Promising results will be validated in a hamster model of the infection.
