Abstract
We propose to study the changes occurring in the cartilage of adult breeding birds in health, disease and as a function of aging. Special attention will be given to the weight bearing antitrochanter of the turkey. The changes in cartilage structure will be analysed by high resolution structural techniques including electron miscroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray microscopy. Complimentary biochemical analysis of collagen and proteoglycan abundance and collagen typing is also essential.
