Abstract

Genes encoding HMW subunits of glutenin will be transferred to lines of bread wheat varying in their quality for breadmaking, as single genes and in various combinations. Regenerated plants will be grown under field conditions to determine the effects of the transgenes on the amount and composition of the gluten protein fraction and on the processing properties of the grain. Detailed studies will also be made of the expression levels, transmission and stability of the transgenes, in relation to integration patterns and copy number. The effects of transforming with two genes on the same or separate plasmids will also be compared. The project will provide information and material of real value to UK industry as well as new basic information on transgene expression in cereals.
