Abstract

Using different approaches at three different sites, we shall experimentally determine quantitative ground rules for the physical behaviour of individual plant cells from a model species (Arabidopsis) and a crop plant (tomato) under small and large deformations and fracture. The relative contribution of different cell wall components and bonds to wall mechanical properties will be determined. The roles of cell wall mechanics, turgor and cell adhesion in the properties of cell assemblies and plant tissues will be approached both experimentally and by modelling and simulation.
