Abstract

This request s for a confocal imaging workstation together with an interface allowing triggering and synchronous recording of image and electrophysiological data. The equipment will form the central component of the research programme outlined in the Case for Support. It will support a range of new and ongoing projects. We have made considerable unique advances in dissecting the components of Ca2+ signals; their mechanisms of initiation, propagation and response specificity in several plant and algal systems: The main focus of the research will include the following projects: i) Localised Ca2+ signalling in relation to membrane channel localisation and activity. ii) Ca2+ signalling and integration of cell cycle and polarisation. iii) Reactive oxygen production and Ca2+ signalling in plants and algae. iv) Ca2+ homeostasis and transcellular Ca2+ transport in calcifying microalgae. v) Prokaryote-eukaryote signalling mechanisms. vi) Membrane transport in phytoplankton.
