Abstract

Confocal microscopy represents a key imaging technology increasingly employed by the applicants for their molecular cell biology-related research. The applicants represent key members of the School of Bioscience Plants Sciences Division that perform international quality molecular cell biology research (often using confocal microscopy) that has been published in high impact journals such as Genes and Development, EMBO J. Current Biology, Plant Cell and Plant Journal. At present, we entirely rely on access to confocal microscopy either through an imaging facility at the Queens Medical Centre adjacent to the main University campus (some 12 miles distant) or through UK and European collaborations. Full time access to the REI2003 sponsored confocal microscope would enable us to more efficiently dissect a wide range of plant-specific molecular cell biology objectives that fall within BBSRC funding priorities including:- 1) Intercellular signalling events in response to gravitropic signals and nematode infection 2) Cell separation processes relating to abscission and dehiscence 3) Intracellular signalling processes a) Polar trafficking of membrane proteins b) Plastid development c) Nuclear signalling events relating to pollen development and fruit ripening 4) Intermolecular signalling events between transcription factors and their interactive partners.
