Abstract

The real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (real-time PCR) allows the accurate quantitation of nucleic acids. This application is for equipment to purchase real-time PCR equipment to support research projects for groups working within the BBSRC remit in the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham. The applicants are taken from among a larger number of potential users. The equipment will contribute towards and build upon the infrastructure investment in genomics research through JIF funding, BBSRC Exploiting Genomics Initiative funding and individual project grants. To maximise its value and as a shared precision instrument, the equipment will be run as a service to the BBSRC (and other) communities at the University of Birmingham, and for the UK E.coli community where there is a demand. This will be done through the successful supervised Functional Genomics Laboratory, which was established with JIF funding (6/JIF13209) in 2000. Individual projects will use real-time PCR to quantitate gene expression in bacteria (Brown, Cole, Lund, Penn, Thomas), plants (Franklin and colleagues) and animals (Chapman, Turnbull, Wheatley). The work will extend and hone data obtained from microarray experiments, as well as being used to study individual genes of interest. This equipment will underpin future work within the BBSRC remit.
