Abstract

We propose to purchase a tandem mass spectrometer consisting of a magnetic sector double focussing instrument coupled to a quadruple analyser. The mass spectrometer will replace two ageing magnetic sector instruments which will be decommissioned on restructuring of IACR. The new instrument will provide greatly enhanced sensitivity and the capacity for MS/MS operations. The mass spectrometer will form an important component of the research infrastructure of the restructured IACR and will be used in all projects requiring chemical inputs. In particular, it will make and essential contribution to the Signalling and Development, Chemical Ecology and Plant Products programmes, which require the identification and/or quantitation of closely related, often isomeric, compounds present at trace levels. Thus, the high sensitivity and selectivity provided by the instrument are essential. Projects in which the mass spectrometer will be used are: the regulations and genetic manipulation of gibberellin biosynthesis; semiochemicals; biotechnological production of high value terpenoids; and biosysnthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
