Abstract
The purchase of an ABI PRISM Sequence Detector (Quantitative PCR Machine) will supplement analytical equipment available within the newly-commissioned Department of Clinical Pharmacology, and will be heavily used in a range of science-led basic and translational research projects in fields closely related to BBSRCs priority interests. The equipment will initially be used in two main fields: (i) Measurement of genomes of vectors for gene delivery/therapy. This will enable determination of - distribution kenetics, specific transduction activity and quantification of virus replication; (ii) Detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms in target genes associated with specific responses to treatment. This is a growing field where applications will proliferate. At present we plan three types of study: quantitate levels of allele-specific mRNA, seek to correlate responses to anticancer drugs, perform extensive pharmacogenetic typing in studies developing cyclo-oxygenase 2 inhibitors. The Q- PCR machine will also find other applications, although all will be within BBSRCs field of priority of Exploiting Genomics. The fields of gene delivery/gene therapy and pharmacogenomics reflect key areas of progress in this discipline, and will form the backbone of research in this new department.
