Abstract
The purpose of this proposal is to create new and specialised tissue culture laboratories that will be linked to a world class imaging facility at the Centre for Cell Imaging in the University of Liverpool. In so doing, this will enable multiple users from two universities with diverse requirements for samples ranging from single cells, through to whole animal tissues to maximise the range and scale of access to this facility. By enabling an expanding and diverse group of scientists to gain access to the imaging facilities, we aim to increase the level of imaging expertise in the region. In addition, by funding a tissue culture laboratory for embryonal stem cell culture, that will provide access at the University of Liverpool to gene targeting technology, this proposal will create a unique opportunity to develop real-time imaging of stem cells during differentiation. Specifically we plan to equip four distinct tissue culture laboratories that will enable researchers to perform imaging studies with the following sample types: 1) Primary cells (isolated and cultured from transgenic and other animal models); 2) Infectious agents (specifically Plasmodium falciparum and retro- and adenoviruses); 3) Embryonal stem cells; 4) Mammalian cells.
