Abstract

We request funding to upgrade two AFMs to operate in liquid and acquire the first cantilever array sensor in the UK for biodetection and surface stress measurements. The importance of our research goals is reflected in the BBSRCs strategic priorities in bionanotechnology, biomolecular sciences, biomembranes and tissue engineering. The work is highly multidisciplinary - involving chemists, physicists, theoreticians, biochemists, life scientists and clinicians - and includes currently funded collaborations and innovative exploratory projects between UCL, Imperial College and Cambridge. We hope that these fundamental studies will provide valuable insights into the complex workings of cells and may lead to important applications for biomedicine.
