Abstract
Ultracentrifugation forms an essential part of many research laboratories. Within the Department of Biological Sciences at the South Kensington campus of Imperial College we have over 20 groups, divided between two buildings (Wolfson and Sir Alexander Fleming), which regularly make use of this technique. The current complement of ultracentrifuges and associated rotors are more than 15 years old and nearing the end of their useful life. In order to maintain the research within the department at an internationally competitive level we need to replace this equipment. The modern ultracentrifuges, combing faster speed with low vibration giving superior separation in a shorter running time, will both support present requirements and improve current protocols. Within this application we detail how several groups make use of ultracentifrugation as a tool and specify both the centrifuges and rotors which are a requirement of their research. The needs range from purification of viruses to protein sample clarification prior to crystallisation trial set-up. The centrifuges are essential to the research of these groups but will form a core facility which can be accessed by all the members of the department. This application requests funding for new ultracentrifuges and associated rotors, to equip both buildings.
