Abstract
The ability to analyse the subcellular distribution of proteins or other molecules within cells and study their distribution within 3D space is now commonplace in cell biology. This proposal seeks to obtain funding for the purchase of a Zeiss Pascal 5 confocal system for the Division of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as a means to achieve this. The proposal is lead by four scientists with a strong requirement for image analysis at the heart of their research programmes. Hence, the equipment will facilitate research in regulated membrane traffic and cytokinesis (Gould), cellular compartmentalisation of cAMP signalling (Houslay), G protein coupled receptor biology (Milligan) and sphingosine 1 phosphate receptor signalling and function (Palmer). These groups have one key central question at the heart of their research - how do cells compartmentalise for function? The absolute key to many of their routine assays and analyses is access to a quality confocal microscope. Our existing machine is old and unreliable. Hence, we seek funds for the purchase of a new Zeiss 5 LSM system that we believe offers the most flexible and user-friendly system ideal for our needs. The requested equipment will also form a facilitating core resource for the division which presently holds over 10 million pounds in active BBSRC grant funding.
