Abstract

BBSRC Research Development Fellowships are designed to enable UK university academic staff to devote themselves full-time to independent research. This is achieved by providing funds to the department to relieve the fellow of all significant teaching and administrative duties. This fellowship will enable Dr M A Tester 1) To develop techniques for the very rapid isolation and then quantitative amplification of high quality mRNA from known cell types in plants; 2) To employ DNA arrays for the study of changes in gene expression over time in single cell types in response to the imposition of salt stress; and 3) To use this information to establish expression profiles of key cell types and their responses to salt stress, enabling both the identification of cell type-specific promoters and the design of transgenic plants with strategic cell type-specific misexpression of particular genes.
