Abstract

Farm animal genome mapping and analysis programmes are characterised by three phases: (1) making an informative map (2) using it to locate QTL. The population will consist of a dairy/beef breed cross and backcrosses (Holstein-Friesian-Charolais). Two essential tasks will be completed during the 3 years of this proposal: (1) the setting up of a central resource population involving the construction of backcrosses and F2s; (2) the establishment of the most appropriate microsatellite loci to use in this resource determined by evenness of spread across the genome and the distinctiveness of the markers between breeds (some of this information is already available to us). A further task will be brought to the point of completion: the identification of major QTL for growth and carcass traits. Future projects will extend the power of the analyses and the range of traits analysed. An important but brief window of opportunity is currently available for the UK to establish itself in bovine QTL identification and analysis; an area in which it is becoming clear that considerable IP will arise!
