Abstract

Large numbers of highly informative microsatellite DNA polymorphisms will be added to the poultry genetic map using existing chicken reference pedigrees. Collaboration will result in a useful low resolution microsatellite map. Sets of dispersed marker loci, representing each chromosome arm, and associated methodology will be identified to allow routine and efficient determination of their segregation in resource pedigrees using an automated DNA fragment analyser. The method will be applied initially to localise quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting fertility, growth and morphological characters in the male offspring of a broiler x layer F2 cross. The presence of homologous markers in other poultry species will also be investigated.
