Abstract

The first public genomic sequence of an oomycete plant pathogen, Phytophthora sojae, will be available in 2003. This grant is to take part in an international effort to annotate this unique genome. HRI will annotate regions of the P. sojae genome syntenic with 4 regions of the Peronospora parasitica genome that contain potential pathogenicity determinants. We have sequenced one of these regions already and will sequence the other three in this grant, two of which contain function avirulence genes. This will lead to an understanding of the evolution of these related genomes in regions carrying genes involved in plant pathogenicity and the conservation of pathogenicity determinants in oomycete pathogens.
