Abstract

Cell signals are known to regulate cell survival and cell death, however little is known about the nature of these signals and how they operate in plants. We have established a system in which conditioned medium from Arabidopsis cell cultures can be used to promote cell survival in low density cell cultures that would otherwise undergo Programmed Cell Death (PCD). We propose to: (1) identify and purify the survival factor(s) in the conditioned medium, (2) study the role of sphingolipid metabolites in regulating cell death and survival, and (3) identify and investigate the role of key proteins (and the corresponding genes) involved in cell survival whose expression is modified by addition of purified survival factor(s).
