Abstract
This project aims to identify the molecular basis of susceptibility and resistance to the angiosperm parasites Striga gesneriodes and S. hermonthica, respectively, using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system. A genomics approach (oligonucleotide microrarray analysis and reverse genetics using T-DNA insertion mutants) will be used to characterise changes in gene expression at the host-parasite interface and in the root system as a whole. In addition, we will use A. thaliana mutants with lesions in known resistance pathways, and a bioinformatics approach to compare signal transduction pathways elicited by plant-plant interactions with those elicited during resistant and susceptible interactions with bacterial and fungal pathogens.
